The Happy Arkansan Happenings: July 2017

Can you believe that it is already the end of July? I seriously cannot! Today on the blog I thought I would start a new monthly series called The Happy Arkansan Happenings. This is a great time for you to catch up with various updates throughout my life, the blog, and my Society6 shop that I want you to know about. It's also a great way for you to get a sneak peek at what's to come on the blog and in my life. Let's get started, shall we?

The Happy Arkansan Happenings: July 2017 | There is a lot happening in the world of The Happy Arkansan. Click through for blog and life updates, music recommendations, a peek into the Society6 shop, and more.

So, the biggest thing that is happening as far as blog updates in July, is a bit of a shift in how I pan to blog. My goal for the rest of the year is to update the blog at least 2-3 times per week. My goal is to move this into more of a 20-something lifestyle blog, but not completely. Don't worry, I will still be publishing LOTS of college advice content, but I want to be more than just long-winded college content for y'all. I want to share more of my life with y'all, things I love with y'all, and more.

When I shared this news with my newsletter this past week I let them know that I would be sharing at LEAST one long-form college advice article per week, which to be honest, is all I ever did for the last year or so. I haven't been publishing a ton on the blog, and now I am ramping that up.

Some of the content I share will be very easy to consume while some of it will require a bit more brain power to get through. I want my blog to be a mixture for you so that you can get the best of both worlds: content that is quick and keeps you entertained and content that helps you get through your collegiate/young adult life without the struggle.

Posts Of The Month

I didn't publish much this month because I was dealing with a lot with my move and whatnot, but I did manage to get out a couple of cool blogs this month:

Ahh, life. July was consumed with moves, birthdays, and getting ready to graduate.

My precious neice

My precious neice

July is a big birthday month in my family. My dad was born on July 13th and my niece was born on July 30th. We usually all come together at the end of the month to celebrate my nieces birthday, and this year was no exception.

This birthday, my niece wanted a hotel slumber party so my sister booked a hotel in Little Rock for one night on Hotwire and we ended up staying at the Doubletree in Downtown Little Rock. We went swimming, watched my niece open her gifts, then she hung out with her friends and played with the makeup she got for her birthday. The next day we went to the mall to go see The Emoji Movie (which wasn't that bad, if you get over all the product placements), and then we went to McDonalds. We didn't stay for her entire birthday, but I am glad we got to go see my niece and help her celebrate the big 7!

Random Fact About Me

Doubletree Long Island Iced Tea

Doubletree Long Island Iced Tea

Since I want this monthly The Happy Arkansan Happenings series to share part of my life with you, each month I want to share a random fact about myself. This month, I want you to know, I am obsessed with Long Island Iced Teas.

I am not sure where my obsession came from, but I love a good Long Island Iced Tea. A lot of my personal Instagram features images of Long Island Iced Teas I have had. This weekend I tried one from the bar at Doubletree.

I have tried all sorts of Long Island Iced Teas at places like Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Cheddar's, Ruby Tuesday, Chili's, etc. I get other drinks besides Long Island Iced Teas, but when I am in a restaurant that I haven't ordered drinks from before, my go to is a Long Island Iced Tea because they are usually fairly inexpensive and they have a lot of alcohol bang for the buck.

Music Of The Month

If you know me, you know that music is a HUGE part of my life. I want to take time to share some of my favorite tracks this month. This month I:

  • Rediscovered my love of Pretty Lights
  • Got slayed by Kesha's new music
  • Was pleasantly surprised that one of my favorite bands, Foster the People, put out new music
  • Mourned the loss of Chester Bennington from Linkin Park
  • and more.

This playlist is 40 minutes long so it's bound to give you some great new tracks to listen to.

This month was a good one for my Society6 shop. I added SO many new designs this month. In fact, I added 180+ new designs this month. That's a lotta new designs, y'all, and I honestly can't even believe that. Here are some design highlights! Each product picture is linked so you can click on the picture to shop the design.

New Nevertheless SHe Persisted Designs

I added some new Nevertheless She Persisted designs to the shop. I love the saying, but I didn't really love the design I had up previously, even though I sold multiple of my first Nevertheless She Persisted design in tapestry form this month. It made me realize that people still love that saying, so I whipped up a couple of more designs this month that I liked better than the one that was selling. Here is a peak at some of the products you can get.

Polka Dot Power

This month I also figured out how to create polka dots, and I kinda went overboard with the types of "polka dots" I created. I went from solely creating circular polka dots to using the various Photoshop brushes that I have to create polka dots. It created some interesting designs. Here are a couple:

My Society6 Shop GIves Back

I decided that I wanted my Society6 shop to give back. So, I decided that 25% of my profits are going to go to one of my favorite nonprofits, the Southern Poverty Law Center. I used information gathered from the Southern Poverty Law Center a lot this past year with my thesis and research assistantship. One of the big things the SPLC does is search for and categorize hate groups across the country. They also, of course, help people fight for justice legally, and just raise awareness about the hate and prejudice happening across the country. They are an amazing organization to help. Keep in mind, I only get 10% of the purchase price, so that means about 2.5% of the total price goes to SPLC. I want to ramp up my Etsy shop soon with digital and physical prints so hopefully then I will be able to offer more to the SPLC.

Lastly, let's chat about what's coming up in August.

Graduation Day

The first big thing that will happen in August is that I will graduate with my Master's on August 4th. I am so excited to walk and be done with this chapter in my life. This has been a long two years and I can't wait to get my degree at the end of this crazy journey. Be sure to follow along with me on my blog's Instagram page because I will more than likely share lots of fun things there this weekend.

New Posts

I have a lot of college related back-to-school content planned for August, so keep your eyes open for some new content to read. As I said I will be publishing content 2-3 times a week and at least one college related content piece weekly. Yay for more content!

New Campaigns

I have been talking with quite a few people and I know for a fact that I have at least one social media only and one regular blog post/social media campaign coming soon. I am pitching and applying for more this week so we shall see how it goes! This will help me bring you more amazing content and I am so excited about the campaigns I have coming up.

I hope that you enjoyed the first edition of The Happy Arkansan Happenings. I am really excited about this entire thing, and I can't wait to do this again in August, y'all!
